Starting Them Early: North Korean Toys

In North Korea, even children’s toys are not exempt from displaying propaganda messages. They carry political slogans such as ‘One of us will kill a hundred of you!’ and ‘Unification of the Motherland’.

Yet these North Korean toys (manufactured in China) probably don’t instill political aggression in a young child as much as the North Korean art presented below. They are a selection from the Museum of the Sincheon Massacre, attendance at which is a compulsory part of the primary school syllabus. In addition, these paintings are displayed in the corridors and classrooms of every North Korean primary and secondary school.

In these ways, children are exposed to violence from an early age through art and are taught to hate the enemy. Even the children’s own paintings must portray violence and hate. The picture below is the template for the North Korean art competition for children.
